Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall… the horses needs vary with the seasons. But one thing that never wavers is the gratitude we feel for our generous donors.
Choose your level of monthly giving.
Please see below for a sampling of how your monthly donation may benefit the mounted unit horses. The horses have many needs, and we have highlighted some of those for your information.
$10 a month
Hay provides year-round sustenance and is particularly critical in the winter months when the horses do not have access to fresh pasture grass. More is needed in the winter, less in the summer. Your donation of $10 each month ($120 annually) provides the boys with approximately 15 bales of hay each year.
$25 a month
Grain and supplements are a vital part of the equine nutritional requirements. On average, a 50 pound bag of grain costs approximately $25. Your donation of $25 per month ($300 annually) will provide each horse with roughly 12 bags of grain per year.
$50 a month
Tack refers to the equipment needed to ride a horse. Tack may include bridles, bits, reins, breast collars. Each horse requires their own tack which is fitted to the individual horse. While the officers are fastidious in their care for the tack, these items do need to be periodically replaced. A monthly donation of $50 ($600 annually) will cover the approximate cost of periodic replacement of these critical items for one horse.
$75 a month
Saddle equipment and turn-out accessories include items that require periodic replacement. Like other tack items, they must be selected based on the unique needs of each horse. Saddle accessories include items such as stirrups, stirrup leathers, saddle pads, and reflective gear. Turn-out gear includes items such as halters, blankets, fly masks, bell boots, and sheets. Poorly fitted equipment can cause significant aches and pains and even permanent damage to a horse over time. Again, with regular cleaning and care, equipment and accessories can last for a few years. However, the police horse equipment is used multiple days each week for several hours at a time thus does require periodic replacement. A donation of $75 per month ($900 annually) will aid in replacement of the staples needed to ensure timely replacement of these important items.
$100 a month
Just like their human counterparts, equine officers require protective equipment. Equipment needs vary depending on circumstances but there are instances where the mounted horses need items such as nose and face shields, front leg protective gear, and rear leg protective gear. Similar to other items of tack, this gear must be fitted to the individual horse. As the unit grows, the need for more sets of protective equipment arises. A donation of $100 per month ($1,200 annually) will cover the approximate cost of a new set of protective gear.
